Walnut is very dark at the beginning, and I do not know if a patch changes color in general. I would like to apply a high gloss poly and scratch at least 4 layers of the surface with steel wool to the surface between the layers.
If the wood is new and has a good texture, I wipe it with linseed oil, so that stresses in the grain (dry) layer with several layers of poly.
